Because of the generosity of our community, hundreds of local children are starting the school year with the supplies they need.
For a second year in a row, the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library partnered with Volunteers of America for Operation Backpack to get backpacks and school supplies into the hands of children in the community. Select Library locations throughout Hamilton County collected supplies July 6 through August 10.
Together, our community donated 358 backpacks and 97 boxes of school supplies!
Here is how those supplies will be distributed:
- 267 backpacks and 72 boxes of supplies will be distributed at various library locations and back-to-school events.
- 105 backpacks and 21 boxes of supplies will be sent to Volunteers of America and distributed through partnerships such as the Boys & Girls Club.
If your family needs school supplies or backpacks, the following locations are distributing materials while supplies last. Please reach out to these locations directly to check availability:
- Elmwood Place Branch: (513) 369-4452
- Groesbeck Branch: (513) 369-4454
- North Central Branch: (513) 369-6068
About Operation Backpack
Operation Backpack began as a Volunteers of America initiative in New York City in 2003. Since that time, it has expanded across the country and provides backpacks and essential school supplies to under-resourced children. Many families face challenges affording these items, averaging $890 per child, as they prioritize basic expenses. The initiative addresses this gap, enabling all children to reach their potential inside and outside the classroom.
