About the
Cheviot Branch
Library service to the community began in 1919 as a deposit station inside the Cheviot Building and Loan Company, 3723 Glenmore Ave. The Library's deposit stations, operating from 1899-1954, were small bookshelves inside public buildings or stores where customers could check out books. Cheviot's deposit station location was centrally situated in the neighborhood.
Ten years later, a full-service branch opened in a rental space at 3739 Glenmore Ave. The library relocated to 3727 Glenmore Ave. in the early 1940s. In the mid-1950s, the library moved once again to 3600 Harrison Ave.
In 1962, the current building, 3711 Robb Ave., was dedicated and opened to a grateful community. The Mid-Century Modern ranch design by architects Cellarius & Hilmer was all the rage and a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
The building received a refresh and reopened in May 2025. Read about renovation process on CHPL's Building the Next Generation Library page. The reimagined design honors the building's Mid-Century Modern elements while planning for future use.
Updates include a new, accessible entry from the parking lot; elevator with access to all levels; a meeting room on the mail level; an expanded kids' area; an adult reading area with a fireplace; upgraded shelving; and more.
