A Tea Party for Jane: Celebrating 250 Years of Austen!

Written by Caroline Hoffman, 1 South Staff, Downtown Main Library

Lace up your walking boots, polish your bonnets, and prepare your wittiest remarks – we’re throwing a tea party fit for a queen. Or rather, a literary icon!

This year marks Jane Austen's 250th birthday. To celebrate, we're inviting you to A Tea Party for Jane on Saturday, Dec. 13, from 1-4 p.m.

Step back in time with us for an afternoon of Regency-era charm, lively discussion, and delightful company. Whether you're a devoted Austen aficionado or a curious newcomer to her brilliant world, this registered event promises an unforgettable experience.

For adults only.

A Day of Regency Delights

We've planned an itinerary packed with activities that would make even Mr. Darcy smile:

  • Regency Era Crafts & Correspondence: Try your hand at the elegant art of letter writing using proper stationery and practice your penmanship. Once your missive is penned, impress your friends by finishing it with a traditional wax seal for an authentic touch!
  • Card Games: Challenge your fellow attendees to a spirited game of whist or loo (just be sure to keep your poker face)!
  • The Great Austen Debate: Prepare for some spirited literary showdowns! We will host elimination brackets to determine the definitive Best Jane Austen Book, the Most Admirable Hero, and the Most Beloved Heroine. Come ready to defend your favorites!
  • Tea & Refreshments: No Austen celebration is complete without proper sustenance. Enjoy a selection of fine tea and light snacks — think delicate cucumber sandwiches and a scone or two.
  • Picture Perfect Moments: Strike a pose at our dedicated photobooth, complete with period-appropriate props. Capture your best demure glance or most commanding stance!

Dress the Part!

While not mandatory, costumes are highly encouraged. Dust off your Empire-waist gowns, don your finest cravats, or simply choose your most elegant attire. Dressing up adds an essential layer of fun and helps transport us all to the world Jane Austen knew so well.

Important Note: This is a registered event, so be sure to secure your spot promptly! Register here.

This is more than just a tea party; it's a gathering of admirers celebrating the enduring wit, romance, and social commentary of a true literary genius.
