Day/Book Day), opens a new window, commonly known as just Día, is a celebration of children, families, and reading from a wide variety of linguistic and cultural communities. It’s celebrated April 30 by libraries across the country.

According to the Association for Library Services to Children, opens a new window (ALSC), “[Día] emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds. It is a daily commitment to linking children and their families to diverse books, languages, and cultures.” While Día is officially recognized April 30, it’s a celebration that should happen each and every day of the year.

Literacy, inclusivity, and discovery are key missions of the Library. “[Día helps] nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child’s home language and culture, while introducing families to community resources that provide opportunities for learning through multiple literacies,” states the ALSC. For other families, it teaches recognition and respect for other cultures and heritages, using language as a powerful tool for strengthening both families and communities.

This year, we’re gearing up to bring Día festivities to your home through our list of digital material recommendations and a special bilingual Storytime at Home with Caitlin Snyder, Harrison Branch Children’s Librarian, and Denise Anderson Branch Senior Manager, on our YouTube channel, opens a new window! Their reading of Book Fiesta! by Pat Mora is being posted at 10 a.m. April 30 for families to enjoy.

We hope that you and your family will celebrate Día by reading and learning together—today, tomorrow on Día, and on all the days that follow.
