National Voter Registration Day: Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2025

Written by Rae Vuic, Government Relations Coordinator, Downtown Main Library

Every September, National Voter Registration Day unites Americans around a bold, joyful mission: helping as many eligible people as possible register to vote in the upcoming election.

Since its launch in 2012, this nonpartisan holiday has become the largest single day of civic action in the country—helping more than six million Americans register to vote!

No matter our background or beliefs, we know that for democracy to work for all of us, it must include all of us. However, according to post-election data from 2024, nearly one in four eligible voters were either not registered or unsure of their registration status. Among young adults aged 18–24, fewer than 60% reported being registered—and registration rates in communities of color continued to lag behind.

That’s why the Library is proud to join with nonpartisan community partners to celebrate this important day—and to help strengthen our shared democracy.

Please join us at the Downtown Main Library from noon-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16, on the Plaza of the North Building. Library staff, along with volunteers from the Greater Cincinnati Voter Collaborative (GCVC), will be on hand to help you register, answer all of your voting questions, and provide you with voter resources, including mail-in ballot applications.

If you can’t make it to the Downtown Main Library, you can visit  any of our 41 branch locations  for assistance in checking your registration status, completing voter registration forms and mail-in ballot applications. ! Please visit our Voter Information page to learn more

Even though this isn't a major federal election year in Ohio, there are many important local races and ballot issues that directly impact your daily life.

In Hamilton County alone, nearly 400 candidates are running for offices such as mayor, school board, city or township council, administrative roles, and municipal court judge. Voters will also decide on more than 30 local issues and levies – shaping the future of our schools, public safety, parks, and infrastructure.

Unfortunately, when elections don’t coincide with high-profile federal contests, voter turnout is often very low. But these elections matter just as much – if not more – because they affect the services and leadership in your own community!

Don’t sit this one out. Make your voice heard where it counts most. Start by registering to vote!

National Voter Registration Day is supported by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), the National Association of Election Officials (Election Center), and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC).
