Spend a Day with a Library Worker: Library Customer Specialist Dana Schriever

Written by Mackenzie Manley, Content Specialist, Downtown Main Library

A library is run by people working in many different roles. They’re all helping community members in wide-ranging ways, from recommending books to connecting people to resources and more. Go inside the day-to-day lives of our staff with our series Spend a Day with a Library Worker.

As a Library customer specialist with a youth focus, Dana Schriever spends most of her days working with kids and teens at the Downtown Main Library.

“I love connecting with the youth in our community the most,” Dana said. “We have a lot of regular kids here and I love learning about them and their interests and being a positive figure in their lives.”

If you’ve ever walked through the kids’ area at the Downtown Main Library, there’s a good chance you’ve interacted with Dana. Much of her time is spent interacting with customers, whether they need someone to talk with or help finding a resource, she’s there to help.

Along with assisting with storytimes and other programming, Dana does outreach with other staff, in which they go to places like skate parks and local schools to educate the community about the Library.

“I love having moments [with kids] every single day where we learn each other's names,” Dana said. “It’s really nice to be on a name-to-name basis with them.”

Specifically, Dana said that recently she spoke to the mother of a toddler in search of educational experiences for her son. Dana was able tell her about the Library’s storytimes, and that it would be an opportunity for her child to socialize with other children, as well as for her to connect with other caregivers.

“To me, just being a welcoming presence for the community is really important,” Dana said. “I want them to come here and feel like they have a friend to talk to if they need to, but also that I [am] willing to give them help.”
