The Library is welcoming a place to connect with others, access resources, and have fun.
Currently, CHPL connects more than 1,000 people each month to vital government resources like free JFS faxing, public computers with Wi-Fi, employment support, Social Security benefits, passport renewals, and more.
Because need is increasing in these areas, CHPL also hosts events like the Mission All-In: Clothing Drive & Resource Fair at the Downtown Main Library. With beats from a local DJ in the background, hundreds of community members stopped by the festive atmosphere for clothes, haircuts, hot meals, and a chance to learn about assistive services from more than 20 local partners like the 513 Relief Bus.
Making Life Easier for Our Neighbors
A customer, Shanda, said her favorite parts of the event were "the food and the clothes."
The clothes are courtesy of local nonprofit Holden Hands, which also distributed socks and shoes at the event.
"Homelessness is a lingering cycle. It’s tough to find hope day in and day out, so being able to be a voice for those individuals is important," said Tyshon Holden, founder of Holden Hands. "If we can make one person's life a little bit easier, we know then it’s a day well spent and a life worth living."
"To have a Library as a hub...we're lucky to be part of such a beautiful event, just one of the many of the Library hosts throughout the year," Holden added.
Meeting People Where They Are
These events are an opportunity for individuals to come and get a meal, potentially make a friend, to meet an organization that might be able to help fill a need that they have, explains Kristen Smitherman-Voltaire, Community and Citizenship Director for Turner Construction, a regular partner at these events.
"They're able to be seen, heard, valued and respected," Smitherman-Voltaire adds. "What's what's been really impactful for me has been the opportunity to witness the way that people really light up when they ask, 'Is it OK for me to find a specific size that I'm looking for?' and we gladly say, 'Absolutely let's help you find something that fits you that makes you feel good.'"
Outside, the Hamilton County 513 Relief Bus, funded by Hamilton County Commissioners, provided mobile medical services and enrollment in relief programs.
When all parties involved are having a good time, you know it's a great event.
"Thank you [to the Library] for coming out and doing this! There's no shame in my game," said Jay, a customer, over his lunch.
