A snowstorm and below-zero wind chills are headed our way, making it the perfect time to cozy up at home. Here are a few ways your library card can brighten up the wintry days.
Before the Snow Starts Falling
1. Pick Up Your Holds
Milk? Check! Toilet paper? Check! Books? Absolutely check! If you have a busy pre-snowstorm list, make your Library visit even speedier by checking out holds and other print materials with the CHPL app's self-checkout feature.
If you can't make it before the snowflakes start flying, don't fret. The Library extends holds to account for Library closures.
“If the Library experiences an unplanned closure, like a snowstorm, your items will stay safely on the hold shelf. We’ll extend your hold by the number of days the Library is closed, so you’ll have extra time to pick up your items once we reopen. Digital holds (like Libby or OverDrive) remain available as always,” says CHPL’s Integrated Library Systems Manager Karen Davis.
2. Find Something off the New Releases Shelf or Pick Up an Old Favorite
Book FOMO is real. For me, it means making a beeline for the New Releases shelf as soon as I walk in to a branch. The magic of the Library is that you can explore something new, and if it’s not your cup of tea, simply return it and try again.
Or if re-reading is your cup of tea, pick up a few favorites. Snowy Day, anyone?
3. Pick Up Your Winter Checkout Challenge Materials
This year’s tote bag and bookmarks are so cute! Don’t fret if you can’t get to the Library before the flakes start flying; you can fully participate from home and pick up your Winter Checkout Challenge swag (including the famous Challenge mug, which will be available starting Jan. 30) when the weather is more favorable.

5. Borrow a Cozy Read on Libby or Build your TBR
Admit it; there's a certain pleasure in building a list for later reading, listening, and viewing! Build a TBR, or “To Be Read” for the uninitiated, on your CHPL.org account’s For Later Shelf, which you can access on the app or by logging in to your Library account on any browser.
CHPL’s own staff picks are a great start. And take your reading game to the next level by placing a hold on the Library’s upcoming releases, even before they hit the shelves!
You can also discover our staff-curated selection of snow-themed books, all available instantly on the Libby app, with no wait: Libby - Snowy Cold Reads ❄️
6. Use Your Library Card at Home: The TL;DR
💻 Borrow eBooks and audiobooks with apps such as Libby and Hoopla
📰 Read current and past magazines and newspapers
🏠 Research your home's history
📕 Browse and place holds on physical materials
