This Fall, Take an Adult Education Class at the Library

Fall always signals a return to school for kids, from the first day of kindergarten to leaving for college. But now that they are hitting the books, what about you? There are plenty of ways for adults to continue learning and growing. 

The Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library has a full range of free classes you can sign up for, everything from career advice and citizenship to gardening and watercolors. For those on the go with little time, check out the standalone classes that require only an hour out of your day. For those with more time on their hands, sign up for a series of classes to attain a more in-depth knowledge of a topic. 

'One and Done' Classes 

These free classes are offered multiple times but are not part of a series. Choose the date that’s most convenient for you.  

  • Facebook Security & Privacy — Virtual class. Get up-to-date on Facebook by reviewing current options for safety on the world’s biggest social networking site. Offered Sept. 14, Oct. 12, and Nov. 9. 
  • I Need a Résumé — Virtual class. If you don’t have a resume or would just like to update one this is the class for you. Offered Sept. 2, Sept. 11, Oct. 7, Oct. 9, Nov. 4, and Nov. 13. 
  • I’ve Got an Interview – Now What? — Virtual class. What to expect and common questions that recruiters ask. Offered Oct. 14, Nov. 11. 
  • Library Career Resources — Virtual class. Explore library resources such as learning computer science basics, self-learning programming languages, becoming familiar with Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office, learning about machine learning, data science, and photography. Also, resources for exams including the High School Equivalency and the GED. Offered every Wednesday Sept. 15 through Nov. 24 except Oct. 27. 
  • Organize Your Life with Apps & Websites — Virtual class. Focusing on apps and websites, this class introduces you to methods for getting a handle on your calendar, budget, and more. Offered Sept. 7, Oct. 5, and Nov. 2. 
  • Vision Boards with Google Slides — Virtual class. develop your personal vision board while learning how to use the design features of Google Slide. Offered Sept. 28, Oct. 26, and Nov. 23. 

'See You Next Week' Classes 

These free classes are part of an ongoing, progressive series. Please note the start and end dates.  

  • English Level 2 Class — Virtual class. A 15-week class to help non-English speakers. All potential students must take a short placement test. Meets Mondays and Tuesdays Sept. 13 through Dec. 21. 
  • ESOL Advanced — Virtual class. A 14-week class to improve your grammar, vocabulary, and ability to speak and write. All potential students must take a short placement test. Meets Tuesdays Sept. 14 through Nov. 30. 
  • Exploring Colored Pencils — Virtual class. Discover the potential and versatility of what colored pencils can do. Meets Thursdays Sept. 2 through Oct. 28. 
  • High School Equivalency Study Group — Virtual class. The Library offers a High School Equivalency study software for those who wish to obtain a diploma. This class offers a study space to empower you to achieve your educational goals. Meets Thursdays Sept. 16 through Nov. 25. 
  • Preparing for the U.S. Citizenship Exam — Virtual class. An eight-session class to prepare people who want to take the test for U.S. citizenship. Meets Wednesdays Sept. 22 through Nov. 10. 
  • Watercolors for Seniors II — Virtual class. For those who’ve taken Watercolors for Seniors I or have a previous background with the materials, this class teaches more involved techniques. Meets Mondays Sept. 13 through Nov. 15. 
  • Understanding the Digital World — Virtual class. Explore the digital world and get a better understanding of today’s technology. Meets Wednesdays Sept. 22 through Nov. 10. 

In a Class by Itself

These free classes are all different, however you can come to as many or as few as you like since they’re not a progressive series.  

  • Creative Writing Workshop — Virtual class. A group that meets every other week to dedicate 90 minutes to work on a resonant writing project. Meets every other Friday Sept. 17 through Dec. 17. 
  • Doodle Meditations — Virtual class. Learn how to make doodling into a meditative practice to increase mindfulness and reduce stress. Meets Mondays Sept. 20, Oct. 4, and Oct. 18. 
  • ESOL Art— Virtual class. Class uses art-based activities to help teach English in a fresh new way. Meets Thursdays Sept. 16 through Nov. 30. 
  • ESOL for Everyone — Virtual class. Various levels can take part in a host of different activities aimed at improving conversational English. Meets Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays Sept. 1 through Nov. 30. 
  • Gardening in the Fall — Virtual class. Class discusses plants that you can plan for your garden that will either be ready for the cold weather season or those plants that can be harvested before the first frost. Meets Tuesdays Sept. 7 through Nov. 16. 

Live, In Person... 

For anybody wanting to meet in person for classes, three are being offered at the newly renovated Price Hill Branch. 

  • ESOL for Everyone — First class meets Sept. 13 and runs every Monday through Nov. 22. Come to as many or as few as you like. 
  • Adult Reading Class — Sign up for this 12-class series that meets every Tuesday between Sept. 14 and Nov. 16. 
  • I Need a Résumé — Three standalone classes are offered Sept. 11, Oct. 9, and Nov. 13.
