Putting together a DIY or thrifted costume? Consider using the Library’s MakerSpace to elevate the fit.
Whether you’re donning a classic ghost sheet, going for a trending pop culture costume — hello, Labubus, Aunt Gladys from Weapons, and K-Pop Demon Hunters! — or being one of your favorite characters, save money by utilizing the Library.
Craft Your Costume at MakerSpace
The Loveland, Reading, St. Bernard branches’ MakerSpaces are all equipped with Sewing Stations! Check their availability to reserve a spot today. No reservations are necessary at the Downtown Main Library.
The Library’s Sewing Stations are your answer to both simple and more advanced designs. Need to add some patches to coveralls to be Ripley from Alien or one of the Ghostbusters? Look no further. Do you have fabric and a spooky dream? Come on over.
Empty bobbins are provided, as is black and white thread. Please bring any fabrics, notions, and patterns you’ll need to execute your project.
And if you need an accessory — like a hair pin or wand — a 3-D printer may do the trick. CHPL has two, one located at the Downtown Main Library and the other at the Loveland Branch. Please note that the 3-D printer is not a quick process. Printing a king or queen chess piece, for example, takes around an hour. Reservations are required. (PLA filament is $0.10 per gram, and PLA glow filament is $0.25 per gram.)
In a time crunch? Been there. Enter the humble button maker. Button makers are available at all MakerSpace locations and select Library branches.
And if you want to customize a shirt, make stickers, or even print temporary tattoos, try a cutting machine, which can cut a variety of materials like vinyl and cardstock. Design your own shapes or use pre-designed ones. (Vinyl is $1 per square foot. Cardstock and colored paper are $0.25 per sheet.) Cutting machines are available at the Downtown Main Library and Loveland, St. Bernard, and Madisonville branches.
Halloween at the Library
Need somewhere to let your costume shine? Several Library locations are throwing Halloween-themed events, from StoryTimes to parties to special book clubs. View the full list on the Library's website.
We can’t wait to see what you create!
