Bestselling Author and Public Health Leader Atul Gawande, M.D. Revealed as 2026 Stern Lecturer

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library will bring award-winning public health leader Atul Gawande, M.D. to Cincinnati for the Mary S. Stern Lecture on Oct. 27 at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. Dr. Gawande is a renowned bestselling author, acclaimed surgeon, and a preeminent voice on improving healthcare. His appearance is the result of an annual lecture series made possible through The Library Foundation, which aims to connect the community with world-class authors and speakers by offering affordable ticket prices.  

Dr. Gawande's lessons from the field of medicine have made him one of the country’s most sought-after speakers across all industries. He will discuss his book, Being Mortalwhich explores how modern medicine often prioritizes safety and life extension over quality of life, particularly in aging and end-of-life care. He advocates for a shift toward alternative care models that foster a more meaningful and dignified end-of-life experience.  

The lecture will begin at 7 p.m., following a book-signing by the author. Tickets are now available, ranging from $5 to $15. Books will be available for purchase at the venue. Seats are limited. For additional information, please visit chpl.org/stern. 

ABOUT ATUL GAWANDE, M.D. 

Dr. Atul Gawande is a renowned surgeon, public health leader, and writer, known for his significant contributions to healthcare and his insights from medicine across industries. A celebrated writer, he has been a long-time staff writer for The New Yorker and authored four New York Times best-sellers, including Being Mortal. His awards include two National Magazine Awards and the Lewis Thomas Award. He is currently working on a book on implementation and behavior change. 

Dr. Gawande has served as a surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and was a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He founded Ariadne Labs and Lifebox to enhance global healthcare. From 2018 to 2020, he led Haven, a healthcare venture by Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan Chase, and served at USAID, overseeing global health programs. His work influences decision-making, performance, and innovation worldwide. 

ABOUT THE MARY S. STERN LECTURE 

The late Mary S. Stern endowed an annual lecture series for the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library through The Library Foundation to support bringing internationally renowned thought leaders to our community. The Stern Lecture selection committee (Tony Covatta, Vicky and Rick Reynolds, Betsy Sittenfeld, and Sandy and Peter Stern) was formed in 2018 to select and invite lecturers who can honor Stern’s legacy by advancing the Library’s mission to connect our community with a world of ideas and information. The committee is committed to making the topic and speaker accessible to the community physically and financially.
