Legal Aid, Community Action Agency partner with Library, YMCA to offer eviction prevention assistance

Cincinnati and Hamilton County are in the midst of an eviction crisis. There are more than 12,000 evictions a year in Hamilton County, a rate of eviction 34 percent higher than the national average. Legal Aid and Cincinnati-Hamilton County Community Action Agency have created a new program designed to mitigate this crisis. The goal is to keep families stable in their homes by preventing evictions.

The Eviction Prevention Assistance Program is conducting a series of information sessions on renters’ rights and options. The first of these information sessions takes place 6-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at the Miami Township Library, 8 North Miami Ave., Cleves. The next session is 6-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at the Norwood YMCA, 2039 Sherman Ave.

Advocates from Legal Aid and Cincinnati-Hamilton County Community Action Agency help low-income renters, who are worried about potential eviction, understand and access the resources available to them. Through the Eviction Prevention Assistance Program, eligible renters, who are behind on their rent but are able to pay the rent going forward, may receive emergency cash assistance to bring them current. Renters may also be eligible for free legal representation by Legal Aid.
