CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library (CHPL) is proud to announce that the Eva Jane Romaine Coombe Director of the Library, Paula Brehm-Heeger, has been named the 2026 Ohio Librarian of the Year by the Ohio Library Council (OLC), the state's highest individual honor for library professionals.
The award recognizes exceptional leadership, innovation, professional achievement, and service to Ohio's libraries and communities.
“Paula's leadership has always been centered on one question: How can the Library better serve our community?”, said Board of Trustees President Diane Cunningham-Redden. “This recognition reflects her vision, dedication, and unwavering commitment to making the Library an essential resource for every resident of Hamilton County.”
Under Paula's leadership, CHPL developed its first comprehensive 10-year Facility Master Plan, providing a roadmap for modern, welcoming library spaces that meet the changing needs of the community. She also helped lead successful levy campaigns that ensure residents continue to receive high-quality library services for years to come.
Her leadership has expanded access through longer service hours, innovative lending opportunities, and partnerships that connect residents with education, enrichment, and community resources. She has also championed investments in staff development, recognizing that strong libraries begin with empowered employees who are equipped to serve the public.
Beyond Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Paula has played a key role in strengthening libraries throughout Ohio. As chair of the Ohio Library Council's Government Relations Committee, she advocates for policies that support public libraries and recently testified before the Ohio Senate Finance Committee on issues affecting library funding and local decision-making.
"Public libraries succeed because of the people who bring them to life every day," said Paula Brehm-Heeger. The award will be officially presented at the Ohio Library Council Convention on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
