Library to offer fine amnesty for furloughed federal workers

The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is forgiving fines for furloughed federal workers until the federal government shutdown ends.

Federal workers who are cardholders of the Library can have their fines forgiven by coming to any of the Library’s 41 locations in Hamilton County in person. They are asked to show they are a federal worker with a form of identification, such as an employee identification badge, a paycheck stub, a letter using the organization’s letterhead or an organization identification card. A staff member will then remove the federal worker’s outstanding bills from their account for any material they are returning that day or for any material returned prior to today (Thursday, Jan. 24). Federal workers can also request to clear an account belonging to their child.

“The Library has always been a place that people can go for help, particularly during hard times,” said Paula Brehm-Heeger, the Eva Jane Romaine Coombe Director of the Library. “We want to make sure furloughed federal workers have full access to our collection and services when they need it the most. We have other free resources too, including computer and Wi-Fi access, Wi-Fi hot spots, streaming movies, music to download, and faxing services. Our staff can also help answer questions about food assistance and other concerns these federal workers may face.”

There are some restrictions for the fine amnesty. For more information, visit CincinnatiLibrary.org or call 513-369-6900.
