9 Library Resources for Boosting Kids’ Social-Emotional Learning

by Library Staff June 7, 2021

Written by Alli Jacobs, Teen Librarian, Walnut Hills Branch

The pandemic has been especially hard on children and teens. School changed dramatically, many had limited socialization with friends, and they absorbed the stresses that adults experienced during this difficult time. It's more important than ever to support their social and emotional growth.

According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, opens a new window, "Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions."

Big emotions can be a challenge for adults to help their kids navigate, but the Library has the following suggestions to help.

      #1 Attend Outdoor Storytime

Come to an outdoor storytime or event to soak up some nature and socialize with others.

      #2 Enjoy Mindful Coloring

Stop by your neighborhood branch library to print out coloring pages. Then go to a quiet spot (some of our branch libraries have lovely outdoor spaces!) and do some mindful coloring.

      #3 Listen to Music

Download peaceful music from Freegal — you may download seven free songs a week with your library card.

      #4 Watch Movies and Documentaries

Access Kanopy for documentaries and movies that allow you to explore your emotions.

#5 Attend Live Homework Help Sessions

Help reduce school stress (or summer homework stress) by getting Homework Help.

      #6 Watch a Storytime Video

Unwind after a long day with a Storytime at Home video on the Library's YouTube channel.

      #7 Attend a Seed Swap

Create a mindfulness garden by picking up plants and seeds at our upcoming Community Plant and Seed Swap.

      #8 Practice New Art Skills

Learn to draw, paint, and get crafty with the videos and classes from expert artists on Creative Bug.

#9: Read Books About Social and Emotional Health

Find a book to learn more and kickstart conversations about social and emotional health. These recommendations from our staff are tailored for various age groups:
