Library collecting new socks and gloves for area homeless

The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is partnering with Strategies to End Homelessness to collect new socks and gloves for the homeless in the area. Donations are being accepted at all Library locations until Saturday, Feb. 3.

The Library reached out to Strategies to End Homelessness out of a desire to help the community, inspired by the premiere of the public, a movie shot at the Main Library last year and showing at Santa Barbara Film Festival Jan. 31. The movie, written, directed, and starring Emilio Estevez, centers on a public library, which becomes a temporary shelter for the homeless during a brutal winter cold spell. The Main Library is heavily featured throughout the film, which also stars Alec Baldwin, Christian Slater, Jenna Malone, Taylor Schilling and Gabrielle Union.

“Keys to ending homelessness include increasing understanding of the issue and engaging members of our generous community in the effort,” said Kevin Finn, president/CEO of Strategies to End Homelessness. “Therefore, we’re proud to partner with the Library throughout 2018 to share insights into the issue of homelessness, and to support a donation drive that will allow Greater Cincinnatians to help neighbors that are experiencing homelessness.”

The Library is only accepting new socks and gloves. Cash or any other items cannot be accepted. The Library also is hosting several events in conjunction with this sock and glove drive in February. More details on those events will be available soon at CincinnatiLibrary.org. For more information, call 513-369-6900.
