Action Needed for Libby and Kanopy Users on Some Android Devices

Libby and Kanopy, used by Library customers to stream or download thousands of eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, films, and read-along books from Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library, are making changes that will require action by people using older versions of the Android operating system.

Library customers using the Libby or Kanopy website or app on Android OS 7.1.0 and earlier must update to Android 7.1.1 or newer by April 15, 2024 to continue using these services.

These changes to Libby and Kanopy will support secure connections to the Library's digital materials for years to come. 

Is My Device Impacted?

Starting the week of March 25, 2024, impacted Libby users will see a message inside the Libby app, prompting them to update their operating system or switch to another supported device to continue using the app. This message will include steps for how to use a setup code to easily copy their library cards, loans, holds, and tags to another device.

After April 15, 2024, impacted Kanopy users will see a message indicating that their operating system is no longer compatible, with a prompt to update, if possible.

Why Is This Change Taking Place?

This update is being made because the encryption provider for these services is discontinuing support for older Android operating systems. More specifically, the web certificate provider Let's Encrypt, opens a new window is discontinuing support for Android operating systems 7.1.0 and earlier. Let’s Encrypt certificates are used to secure connections on many websites and apps, including those from OverDrive, the company that powers Libby and Kanopy for the Library.

According to Overdrive, use of Android OS 7.1.0 operating system has been declining and accounts for approximately 1.5% of all OverDrive users, with Libby users being the most impacted. This change is being made in accordance with updates with other tech companies. For example, Google has also discontinued support for these earlier versions of the Android OS.
