The 2026 Finley & Ferguson Memorial Essay Contest honors the legacy of two librarians: Mary Finley and George Ferguson.
Finley was one of the first African American librarians hired by the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library (CHPL). Ferguson created the Mary Finley Memorial Essay and Speech Competition in 2002 to recognize the impact Finley had on his life as a young person growing up in the West End.
The contest returned in 2021 to commemorate the West End Branch Library’s 60-year anniversary. This year, the contest recognizes both Finley and Ferguson.
How to Enter the Finley & Ferguson Essay Contest
This year’s submissions should answer the following prompt: Imagine the West End without a library. What would be different? Explain how the library currently impacts people’s lives in the West End and why it should continue to exist.
The contest is open West End students and residents in grades 5-10. Submissions will be accepted until 6 p.m. on Friday, July 31.
Essays must be worked on at the West End Branch Library with staff, who will be available to assist youth with their essays during open hours. Time will also be set aside every Friday at 2 p.m. for writing assistance with staff.
