West End Branch Library, one CHPL's most visited branch libraries, is closing to prepare for its first major improvements since opening in 1961. Part of CHPL's Facility Master Plan, this project joins the investment in library locations across Cincinnati and Hamilton County to create more welcoming, accessible spaces for our customers.
To complete the project quickly and safely, the West End Branch will close March 11 with an estimated reopening in fall 2023.
Reimagining a Community's Gathering Space
Based on requests from our community members in the West End, we'll be reimagining the existing building to maximize the space while prioritizing accessibility improvements to the entrances, restrooms, and throughout the branch. Our customers said they support the branch's current location because it is near schools and within walking distance of many residences.
The $2.8 million project includes a completely redesigned building with more usable interior space. The relocated entry will include a vestibule to improve access to the building. All of the restrooms will be fully accessible. The interior layout and furniture will be upgraded to improve both staff and customer experience.

Help us send off the branch in style at our closing celebration, complete with pizza, Singo! (music-themed bingo), and opportunities to share your memories of the branch.
Come to the celebration on March 10, 4-6 p.m. - the last day before construction begins!
Staying Connected During Construction
Construction is planned to be complete in the fall of this year. Customers will be able to browse materials and pick up holds at the Downtown Main Library, just a mile east of the West End Branch Library.
The Library is grateful for taxpayer support of a 2018 levy that funding this and other CHPL facilities improvements. Follow along with the construction with photos and progress updates on the project posted regularly on the West End Branch Next Generation Library webpage.
